Calcium carbonate is extracted from the mine to be used in industry. Pure calcium carbonate can be produced from marble, or it can be produced by passing carbon dioxide through a solution of calcium hydroxide.
Applications of calcium carbonate:
Calcium carbonate is transformed into lime by the loss of CO2, which is used in the construction works, iron extraction industry and steel production as a melting aid and for the preparation of calcium carbide. Lime is used in agriculture for soil modification and to adjust its PH. Calcium carbonate is used in ceramic and tile industries, especially in the glazing industry. Due to the formation of eutectic, it reduces the melting point. When applied in glaze, it lowers the coefficient of thermal expansion of the glaze. Calcium carbonate is one of the mostly used minerals applied in the paper industry, plastics, paints and coatings as both filler and colour coating (due to its special white colour). In the paper industry, it is valued for its high brightness and light dispersion throughout the world, and is used as a cheap filler to illuminate the opaque surface of the paper.
Application of calcium carbonate in construction:
Calcium carbonate is important both in construction of materials and as cement particles and components. It is also used in making mortar for arranging the bricks on together, concrete blocks, rocks, roof coverings, resin composites and tiles. Calcium carbonate decomposes carbon dioxide and lime to create a basic material in the construction of steel, glass and paper. It is applied detergent industry, in masterbatch industries, in glaze industry, in profile industry, and in glazing and ceramic tile industries.
Application of calcium carbonate in the plastic and rubber industry:
Calcium carbonate is widely used in plastic industries due to its low oil absorption, rapid release, low cost, good luminosity, and low stiffness.
Application of calcium carbonate in the colour industry:
Calcium carbonate is used widely in colour industry due to its proper price, optical and mechanical properties. When calcium carbonate is softer, it will give better covering for colour.
Application of Calcium Carbonate in Pharmacy:
Calcium carbonate is roughly insoluble in ordinary water, and is gently dissolved in water with some carbon dioxide or ammonium salts. It is almost insoluble in alcohol and it boils in acetic acid, chloride acid, and nitric acid.
Application of calcium carbonate as filler:
Calcium carbonate is used as filler in the industries. Fillers are added to liquids and solids leading to one or more changes in the form of increased mechanical strength, reduced or increased specific gravity, increased thermal resistance, change in concentration, and reduced total price. Calcium carbonate is used in industries, plastic industries, rubber industry, floor coverage industry, PVC sheet industry, wire and cable industry, artificial leather industry, pipe industry, paper industry. The paper is made up of cellulosic fibers, which its fibers are filled with mineral particles. Coating materials are used in paper industry to increase the quality of printing on paper, and calcium carbonate account for 50-5% of it. Calcium carbonate can act as a pigment and it reduces the need for a polymer and calcium carbonate accounts for 35% of it.
